How does the Kb/s affect bandwidth?
| Q: How does the Kb/s (Kilobits per Second) affect my transfer/bandwidth? A: The Kb/s is comparable to the quality of the audio, the higher the Kb/s the better quality of sound, the more depth to your music. Usually CD quality is considered to be 128kb/s (currently we can support up to 224Kbps!) However why not use the highest quality possible you may ask, its simple, the higher quality the more bandwidth it uses, and for slower users who may not be on high-speed broadband this can make a difference to them not only in quality but also will mean they can have underruns and have very long buffer times. You can work out your max listener hours by a simple calculation to give you an approximate. Variables: Q = Kb/s L = Number of listeners. H = Total KB used for one listener per hour. B = Total Bandwidth (in GB) K = Total Bandwidth (in KB) T = Total Listener Hours (How much time everyone can listen to your online stream for per month.) (Q x 60) x 60 = H [This is the total kilobits used for one listener each hour.] (B / 1024) / 1024 = K K / H = T Note: If your streaming in stereo (recommended) then the actual quality of sound for each channel is half the Kb/s so if your streaming in 64Kb/s then each channel will have 32Kb/s quality. However, there is no need to worry as out shoutcast streaming packages come with unlimited bandwidth, making things simple. |
