Bandwidth (Data Transfer) - The Facts

When explaining Bandwidth / Transfer it can get confusing, so first lets explain what each is.

Bandwidth:

Bandwidth is how much data can be sent through a connection at the same time. For example if the connection is 100Mbit (MegaBit) it can squeeze 1,000,000 bits or 125kB (kilobytes) per second.

So if a server is on a 100Mbit connection it could, in theory, transfer around 32TB / month. However obviously you would not be able to achive anything near this on most server setups, due to the spec of the server and more importantly the datacentre limitations, even the best datacentres will have certain limits on the amount of data and network resources users may use.

Most unmetered servers could expect to transfer around 4/5TB without issue.

Data Transfer:

Data Transfer is how much data you are allowed to transfer through the connection, this is often confused with bandwidth and many webhosts also confuse these terms.

You can view you how much data transfer you are using each month in cPanel, as well as stats about what is using it.

So called "unlimited" bandwidth:

Some hosts choose to offer "unlimited bandwidth" which is far from the truth and in most cases impossible. Often hosts which offer unlimited bandwidth/transfer (and diskspace) rely on people only using a relatively small amount of usage (usually no more than 2GB) but XDnet strongly belives you pay for what you get, no unlimited gimmicks! Even if you don't choose XDnet, always beware of unlimited offers!
