Advantages and Disadvantages of a VPS

What is a VPS?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server, sometimes called a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server). VPS is a fantastic technology which enables isolated server enviorments on one physical server.

One hardware node/server can host many Virtual Servers, we host around 14 VPS servers on each node. Each node is a high end server usually with dual quad core or more CPU power.

Each VPS acts like a real stand-alone server, with full root access and total control to install your own applications and software without the restrictions of a shared hosting enviorment. Each VPS can also be rebooted independently and has its own root, ip's. users, memory, processes, ports.

Advantages:

  • The cost of VPS is much cheaper than dedicated servers, get the full control without the cost.
  • Full root access to install your own applications which cant be done on a shared hosting enviroment.
  • Totally isolated from other users, what they do doesn't impact your VPS, resources or hosting experience in anyway. If one VPS crashes, it doesn't effect the others.
  • Each VPS has its own Operating system.
  • Can set servers up to preform any function required, e.g. can be setup to be a dedicated mail server, or backup storage

Disadvantages:

  • VPS come with limited resources, and are unsuitable for large websites which require lots of RAM or CPU power, this is when a dedicated server is required.
  • Takes more time and understanding for users to maintain and configure the server compared to shared hosting.
