What is ICANN?

Q: What is ICANN?

A: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Set up in October 1998 by a selection of some of the first Internet's organisations (business, educational and user communities). ICANN assumed responsibility for technical functions previously contracted to IANA as well as other groups under U.S. government contract.

What does ICANN do?

It's simple... well it is not, but the idea is simple. ICANN organises and in effect governs the assignment of Domains, IP Addresses, Protocol Parameters and Port numbers which must remain unique for the Internet to function.
